So much time spent
learning; how much you’ll never know
Searching, seeking for the truth, from ignorance we grow
And when we think we have it, the truth is in our sight
Our hopes are smashed and soon we see, never were we right
To know thyself, that is the end. It’s truth we cannot find
All things outside experience, to those, we’re ever blind
This frantic search, this everquest; goes on, it does not end
And so we must go on in life, our failure to transcend
For living is the key, from whence the answers come
To learn as things present themselves, and add them to the sum
Time ticks by while slowly we come to know our mind
Only to realize that admitting it will put us in a bind
We are not who we think we are, nor who we’d like to be
We struggle to reconcile the truth to any small degree
But experience has taught us that we put on a good show
And others as the audience, the truth, will never know
Though the quest goes on, its importance now is less
For inside ourselves, against all odds, the truth we must confess
To realize that our own beliefs, that which we hold as true
Could instantly be proven wrong, demolishing our view
This fickle life we live, full of change and mystery
Becomes a quest to understand our own misguided history
The answers to the choices, the ones yet to be made
Stem from all we learned while on this self-imposed crusade
And so much time has now been spent towards knowing who we are
We’ve lost sight of bigger things and truth has left a scar
Though the quest goes on; we bury what we’ve learned inside our mind
For who we are is something that can never be defined |
